Discovering God Through His Names

Why Do the Names of God Matter?

Just as we use different names to describe the special people in our lives—mom, dad, friend—each name holds a unique meaning and connection. The same is true for God's names. These names, revealed through scripture, reflect His multifaceted nature and the promises He offers in every season of life. They aren’t just ancient titles; they are deeply personal invitations to know Him more intimately.

Take Hagar's story in Genesis 16, for example. In her darkest moment, feeling abandoned and alone in the desert, she encounters God and calls Him El Roi, "The God Who Sees Me." This wasn’t just a casual naming—it was a profound acknowledgment of God’s character and His promise to never leave us unseen. Every name of God we encounter in scripture comes from a moment of significance where He revealed who He is to His people.

The Names of God and Their Modern Relevance

Here are a few of the many names of God and how they can speak to us today:

  1. Jehovah Jireh – The Lord Who Provides
Whether you’re seeking financial provision, wisdom, or peace amidst chaos, Jehovah Jireh is a reminder that God is our ultimate source. It’s not just about material needs—He provides direction, strength, and clarity when we feel overwhelmed.

  2. El Roi – The God Who Sees Me
In moments of loneliness or when we feel invisible, El Roi assures us that we are fully seen and deeply known by God. Whether you’re scrolling through social media feeling unseen or struggling in a private battle, God’s watchful care is constant.

  3. Jehovah Rapha – The Lord Who Heals
God’s healing touches every part of our lives—physical, emotional, and spiritual. He is the restorer of broken hearts and the healer of wounds we carry.

  4. Jehovah Nissi – The Lord Our Banner
In the face of challenges, societal pressures, or spiritual battles, Jehovah Nissi reminds us that He is our victory and strength. His banner over us is love, protection, and triumph.

  5. El Shaddai – God Almighty
